Montgomery County Recreation Asking Residents to Donate New or Gently Used Dresses for ‘Project Prom Dress’

Montgomery County Recreation is working to ensure that the dream of attending prom can come true for high school juniors and seniors. For “Project Prom Dress,” the Recreation Department is collecting gently used and new dresses that will be distributed on Saturday, April 16, at the Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center in Burtonsville. Prior to that date, dresses can be donated at five community recreation centers.

Once collected, the dresses will be dry cleaned and will be available in a special formal dress boutique that will be held at the Marilyn Praisner Community Recreation Center. Juniors and seniors will be able to view the dresses and select one for free from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 16.

According to a USA Today story, teens spend an average of $600 on proms. For many families, the money is not available for girls to buy a dress to wear to their prom. Project Prom Dress seeks to eliminate that obstacle to attending what turns out to be, for many students, one of the most memorable days of high school.
