Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, will host a special community celebration for the recently renovated Maydale Nature Classroom in Colesville on from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6.
The nature classroom is located at Maydale Conservation Park at 1638 Maydale Drive in Colesville.
The free event (rain or shine) will include a brief speaking program and self-guided tours of the facility. There also will be family-friendly activities including s’mores around a campfire, arts and crafts and cider pressing. Joining the ceremonies will be Montgomery Parks Director Mike Riley, Montgomery Planning Board Chair Casey Anderson, County Council President Tom Hucker and President of the Friends of Maydale Renée Katz.
“The Maydale Nature Classroom brings nature center programming to an underserved area of the county,” said Parks Director Riley. “I appreciate the support we received from the Friends of Maydale in creating a beautiful and sustainable facility where children and families can learn about the value of environmental stewardship.”
The nature classroom is the Montgomery Parks’ first “net-zero-designed facility.” It is made from a repurposed parks trailer and was created with sustainable, locally sourced materials. It incorporates solar panels that support the energy needs for the facility and includes a 275-gallon, underground rainwater harvesting system that supports toilet flushing inside the facility. It originally opened in October 2019 and offers year-round nature-based programming.
