A new covered riding arena has been dedicated at the equestrian center of Meadowbrook Stables in Chevy Chase. The arena, which is located within Meadowbrook Local Park, was constructed over the past 18 months and includes seasonal enclosures and various environmental features such as stormwater management, native plantings, and a 145kW solar power roof installation.
Meadowbrook Stables is located just south of East-West Highway in Chevy Chase. It is adjacent to Meadowbrook Park, which is located at 7901 Meadowbrook Lane. The facilities are operated in partnership with Montgomery Parks, which is part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.
“We are so proud of our partnership with Meadowbrook Stables, our first public-private partnerships.” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks. “Parks and Meadowbrook Stables staff worked together closely to ensure the successful completion of this new facility which will allow the stables to continue to thrive for many years to come. Through this unique partnership, we can provide amenities and programs that would not otherwise be possible.”
The arena has been part of a long-time plan to improve the center.
“This arena has been a long time coming,” said Katrina Weinig, executive director of Meadowbrook Stables. “It would not have been possible without the generous support from our donors. Their contributions will benefit many generations of riders to come, not to mention the incredible environmental benefits.”
The new arena allows for year-round instruction, regardless of the weather, and provides a venue for the horses to get daily exercise and training that they need to stay healthy. Environmental benefits include reduced sediment and nutrient run-off into the adjacent Rock Creek stream as a result of native trees shrubs and grasses planted. The solar panel roof will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping Montgomery County to meet its energy and climate goals.
Meadowbrook Stables is one of the oldest and last remaining urban equestrian facilities in the United States. Meadowbrook first opened in 1934. The 10-acre riding school is currently home to 50 horses and teaches more than 400 riders each year in lessons, summer camps and competitive programs. Tens of thousands of people have ridden at Meadowbrook over the years, including prominent national figures such as General George S. Patton and former first ladies Eleanor Roosevelt and Jacqueline Kennedy.
