Finding Alternatives to Plastics Encouraged During ‘Plastic Free July’

Plastics are used to make a wide range of products, including appliances, furniture and clothing, but packaging is the largest market for plastics and the largest source of plastic waste. Most of the plastic used is then discarded. There is a national effort to recognize this month as “Plastic Free July” and the County’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is encouraging residents to join the movement.

Americans generate more than 36 million tons of plastic waste per year, according to a 2023 report of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. DEP said July is a good time to give up plastics, when possible, by finding alternatives to single-use plastics. Even taking small steps can make a big difference.

Here are some ways that DEP suggests can help reduce or eliminate the use of plastics:
  • Buy in bulk as much as possible instead of buying single-serve or travel-sized items.
  • Take a reusable bag when you go shopping instead of using plastic bags.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water.
  • Use durable, reusable silverware or a travel mug instead of disposable cutlery or cups.
  • “Recycle Right” and only place acceptable recyclable items in recycling bins and wheeled carts. Switch from items labeled as “No. 6 plastics.” Although in many cases they look and feel like plastics, they are different and are not recyclable in Montgomery County.
Reusable, washable and durable containers can help eliminate single-use plastic food containers and beverage cups. Re-use your own containers when possible. This can make a difference one meal at a time.

Even reducing the use of plastics in small ways can make a difference. If you do not need a straw, skip it. One reusable straw can eliminate the need for hundreds of plastic ones. Give up plastics and try a reusable straw the next time you take a sip.
