On June 29, 2025, Montgomery County and the region took a major step forward in public transportation when the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOT’s) Ride On Reimagined Year 1 implementations and WMATA’s Better Bus Network both officially launched. These coordinated bus route updates were designed to work hand in hand, improving service, simplifying transit and helping you get to where you need to go faster and more reliably across both transit services.
These changes were planned in collaboration to make transfers and navigation more aligned. By aligning our service changes, Ride On and WMATA reduce confusion and give riders a more seamless transit experience across both systems.
One difference in the roll out of changes is that MCDOT Ride On buses also instated zero-fare for all riders at the same time.

Recent ‘Ride On Reimagined’ Study Leads to Planned Service Enhancements
A comprehensive bus network implementation plan, a recommendation of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s “Ride On Reimagined” study, will expand access to public transportation and provide faster, more reliable bus service by changing bus routes and frequency, expanding coverage to underserved areas and adding new bus routes.
The study included an assessment of the current Ride On and Metrobus network in the County. The study team worked closely with WMATA’s Better Bus Initiative, which aimed to assess widespread changes to Metrobus. "Ride On Reimagined" also looked at ridership patterns and was based on feedback from bus riders, bus operators and potential bus riders to better understand transportation needs.

Veterans Honored by County Ride On Service with ‘Operation Green Light’ Bus
The ceremony was held in the plaza adjacent to the Executive Office Building in Rockville. Among those attending were County Council Vice President Kate Stewart and Councilmembers Will Jawando and Sidney Katz; MCDOT Director Chris Conklin; Commander Chris Thomas of the U.S. Navy (Ret.), representing the Commission on Veteran’s Affairs; and Donny Williams, regional manager for Serving Together
Operation Green Light, a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties, honors veterans for their immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom. The program asks for displays of a green light, from Nov. 4-11, in a window of businesses or residences to honor veterans. The campaign also aims to highlight resources available to veterans for support.
Speakers, councilmembers and community leaders arrived at the ceremony in MCDOT’s #OperationGreenLight Ride On bus, which is wrapped in a design depicting the U.S. flag and an outline of veterans and highlighting Operation Green Light. The Commission on Veteran’s Affairs website and resource line is printed on the back of the bus.
As Veterans Day approaches on Monday, Nov. 11, there also will be 385 Ride On buses with advertising cards on board that includes contact information for veterans resources and services. Those services can be accessed by calling Serving Together at 855-738-7176 or visiting the Commission on Veterans Affairs website.
The Operation Green Light bus will be deployed on bus routes throughout Montgomery County. Riders hoping to catch the Operation Green Light bus can follow @MCDOTNow on social media to find out where the bus is scheduled to run.

Purple Line Construction Will Lead to Traffic Delays on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring Through January
A temporary traffic shift on Georgia Avenue (MD 97) between Silver Spring Avenue and Wayne Avenue (MD 594) will be in place until January 2025 due to construction related to the Purple Line. Work will typically occur from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. but may continue nights and weekends, as necessary.
Travel will be reduced to two lanes in either direction and shift to the west around the work zone at Bonifant Street. The traffic shift will facilitate utility and track installation across Georgia Avenue. Pedestrian detours will be in place around the work zone. Access to businesses will be maintained and some parking will remain on Georgia Avenue.

Great Seneca Transit Network Launched, with ‘Pink and ‘Lime’ Bus Routes, Bringing Fast, Equitable Access to Medical Centers, Education and Life Sciences Facilities
The GSTN, which began service on Sept. 8, offers commuters and residents faster, more frequent transit through two new Ride On extRa bus lines, designated as “Pink” and “Lime.” The routes operate from 5 a.m.-7:45 p.m. on weekdays and from 6:15 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on weekends. There is service every 10-15 minutes during peak periods on weekdays.
Among those attending the ceremonies were Maryland Delegates Lily Qi and Joe Vogel; Montgomery County Council Vice President, Kate Stewart; Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz; Marilyn Balcombe; Evan Glass; Natali Fani-González; Dawn Luedtke; and Laurie-Anne Sayles; City of Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman; City of Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton; Joe McAndrew, assistant secretary of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT); Chris Conklin, director MCDOT; and Anne Khademian, executive director of the Universities at Shady Grove.
Prior to the event, local business owners and elected officials provided remarks about the impact of the new service in a series of videos available on the MCDOTNow YouTube channel.
“The Great Seneca Transit Network will make transit a viable option for people going to work and school,” said County Executive Elrich. “These new express bus routes with signal priority, access to Metrorail and some portions of dedicated bus lanes provide a crucial link to the more than 9,000 private sector life sciences jobs and to the Universities at Shady Grove and Adventist Medical Park. This new service reflects our commitment to improving daily life for our residents and supports a flourishing economic hub that will continue to attract employers, students and workers.”
The new bus lines run east-west connections between the Shady Grove Metro and the Traville Gateway Transit Center, adjacent to the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville. The Pink Line links the busy Shady Grove corridor with the Life Sciences Center via Medical Center Drive. The Lime Line uses I-370 to provide an express route to RIO, Crown Farm and the heart of the Life Sciences Center at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.
“The Great Seneca Transit Network is a tremendous step forward in our plan to create a thriving and diverse community connected by a safe and reliable transportation system,” said Council President Friedson. “We envision the Life Sciences Center as a complete community with affordable housing options, education and employment opportunities, and entertainment and shopping centers, that is accessible by a comprehensive transit infrastructure that prioritizes public transportation, pedestrian and cyclist access.”
Both bus routes will operate with sections of dedicated bus lanes and signal priority, which involves the controlling of traffic lights to prioritize buses so they can reach their destination faster.
“We designed the Great Seneca Transit Network around the needs of the community it serves,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. “The express routes will significantly reduce commute times for key destinations. Transportation from the Shady Grove Metro station to Adventist Medical Center via the Pink line will take 21 minutes, less than half of the current 43-minute commute on the existing route. The buses offer fast, frequent service and accommodate shift changes and student schedules.”

Dedicated Bus Lanes Project Completed on University Boulevard in Wheaton
Also joining the event were Councilmember and Transportation and Environment Committee Chair Evan Glass, Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz and Natali Fani-González, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Senior Vice President for Bus Services Leroy Jones, Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administrator Will Pines and Montgomery County Department of Transportation Director Chris Conklin.
The brightly painted red dedicated bus lanes run along the park border on University Boulevard and were opened for use on late February. The dedicated bus lanes along the more than two-mile section of roadway will allow buses to travel with minimal motor vehicle traffic obstruction along one of the area’s busiest and most congested corridors.
The dedicated bus lanes on University Boulevard are part of a larger MCDOT program, the Bus Priority Project, that will advance similar bus-only lanes. The bus lanes will provide faster, more reliable service along a route with critical service connections to MetroRail, Ride On, Metro buses and the Silver Spring Transit Center. The lanes are designated with solid red paint and “Bus Only” text.
"We are redesigning our approach to transit, to prioritize transportation options that are equitable and climate-friendly," said County Executive Elrich. "The University Boulevard dedicated bus lanes will improve the daily commute for thousands of workers, students and residents along this corridor who depend on public transportation. Additionally, these new bus lanes will also attract new riders to Metrobus and Ride-On services as a more convenient, safe and cost-effective option as compared to using automobiles. I appreciate the work of MCDOT and our partnership with Metro and Maryland State Highway to make commuting via bus better throughout Montgomery County."
The University bus lane corridor serves three Ride On bus lines (Route 7, Route 8 and Route 9) and WMATA’s C2 and C4 Metrobus lines. The C2 and C4 Metrobus lines carry about 9,300 riders each weekday, the second-highest ridership route in the Washington, D.C., region.
"I want to thank MCDOT for their efforts to create a better bus experience for our customers," said Metro Senior Vice President Jones. "Frequent, reliable bus service provides pathways to opportunity for riders by connecting them to jobs, education, healthcare and vital services across the region. Our region as a whole will benefit from these improvements to our bus service by spurring economic development, reducing traffic congestion and improving health outcomes through the increase in physical activity and reduction in air pollution. Better bus service builds better communities."
MCDOT will monitor the effectiveness and safety of the bus lanes as a pilot program for 12 months. An evaluation will be done in December 2025 to confirm that the bus lanes are beneficial on this corridor.
"The new bus lanes allow us to improve service for thousands of riders with minimal impact on drivers," said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. "A previous study conducted by the Maryland Department of Transportation showed that the lanes added, on average, fifteen seconds to vehicle commute times during rush hour. WMATA bus speed data showed that bus lanes will benefit transit operations and bus customers. Additionally, if we can make bus service more appealing by increasing speed and reliability, more people will choose bus service over driving. These lanes will move more people, faster."
WMATA partnered with MCDOT to seek approval for the project from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT/SHA), which maintains jurisdiction over the State road.
"We are grateful for MCDOT advancing this project to improve Maryland's multimodal transportation system," said State Highway Administrator Will Pines. "Efforts such as these benefit the region by providing better transit connections to life’s opportunities. This project serves as a model for the importance of state and county partnership in Montgomery County and across the state."
The new bus lanes will allow use by emergency vehicles and bicycles. Cars can only enter and utilize the bus lane approximately 100 feet prior to making a right turn, as indicated by striped, red lines.
Details about the dedicated bus lane project on University Boulevard can be found on MCDOT’s University Boulevard Dedicated Bus Lane project page.
