Faith-based Community Security Grants

Montgomery County will award $200,000 to support the security needs of the faith-based community. The funds, administered by Montgomery County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will support faith-based institutions which have experienced or are at high risk of experiencing hate crimes.

More information on the security grant and grant recipients is available here.

  1. Why is Government giving money to support the security of churches, who already exist tax free in our county? That $200K sure would be nice back in the pockets of the taxpayers.

  2. How is it Constitutional to earmark tax money solely to religious organizations? A program making government funded grants available to any non-profit organization including religious organizations would be OK, but making secular organizations ineligible is not only poor policy -- don't kids in secular private schools deserve added security too? -- it is also unAmerican to favor religious groups over non-religious groups.

  3. Another unnecessary use of taxpayer $. Actions like this weaken the wall be tween church and state, and allows faith based institutions to be favored over other entities that may need security like schools. Already, these institutions do not pay taxes, their clergy get housing and other breaks, and they are often backed by huge organizations that do not need any financial help. Poor decision.

    1. All clergy do not get "housing and other breaks" and they are not all "backed by huge organizations that do not need financial help. Schools have access to security. Montgo, ery County citizens should have access to security wherever they are. That includes schools, hospitals, AND churches, large or small, that cannot afford security.
