Glenmont Forest Community Fall Art and Harvest Block Party Celebration Will Include Introduction of Two New Park Amenities on Sunday, Oct. 8

The Glenmont Forest Neighbors Civic Association (GFNCA) Fall Art and Harvest Block Party will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8. In addition to family fun, games, exhibits and art activities, the annual event this year will celebrate the activation of two new park amenities: the Serenity Community Gardens and the Gathering Tree public art projects.

The new park and pavilion is located at the corner of Randolph Road and Georgia Avenue adjacent to Fire Station No. 18 in Wheaton-Glenmont. There is no charge to attend the block party. There is limited parking on Grandview Avenue. The event will take place rain or shine.

The block party will feature local vendors, displays of nonprofits, artisans, information booths from local, State and Federal officials, project grant funders, County departments and lively entertainment. There will be games, fun and family activities including moon bounces.

GFNCA block parties celebrate the community’s diversity, local arts and the environment. The annual community block party returned last year after a brief hiatus due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Highlights of this year’s party will include:

· 12:30 p.m.: Celebration of the installation of the Gathering Tree Public Art project by local artists Sandra Perez-Ramos and Stuart Diekmeyer. The project was fabricated by Howard Connelly. The Maryland State Arts Council provided grants to fund the project. Attendees will be able to help in the ground mural painting, which features the word “welcome” in the multiple languages spoken in the neighborhood.

· 1:30 p.m.: Announcement of new grant funding for Phase 2 of the Serenity Community Gardens. Support for the pilot phase of project was provided by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection, Impact Silver Spring and others. Tree Montgomery will provide an overview of the new trees to be planted next spring and plans for winter and spring expansion during Phase 2.
