Community Meeting and Walking Tour on Sunday, Nov. 12, Will Present Concepts for Proposed ‘Sensory Trail’ at Fairview Road Urban Park in Silver Spring

A community meeting and walking tour hosted by Montgomery Parks from 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12, will be an opportunity to learn more about a proposed sensory trail at the Fairview Road Urban Park in Silver Spring. The project would be a first for Montgomery Parks and will help to make County parks more inclusive and welcoming to all visitors.

The inclement weather date for the meeting and walking tour at Fairview Road Urban Park will be 2-3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3. Fairview Road Park is located at 8900 Fairview Rd. in Silver Spring.

Fairview Park is a two-acre park that serves the local community and people who work in the area between Downtown Silver Spring and the Woodside neighborhood. The park features a playground and a picnic area and is a relatively recent addition to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission system.

During the meeting, park planners will present two concepts for the potential sensory trail location with a detailed introduction to the various sensory stations planned along the trail.

Sensory trails are designed outdoor spaces that stimulate and engage the senses. They are typically used as an inclusive environment for people of all ages and abilities, including those with sensory processing disorders, autism, are blind or have low vision or other disabilities, as well as individuals seeking relaxation and sensory exploration.

The meeting, including a brief presentation, will be followed by a walking tour and question and answer session.

Parking for the meeting will be available at the Cameron Street Garage in Silver Spring and there will be limited street parking. Attendees may be dropped off in the park via the curb cut facing the playground.

This meeting will be held outdoors and there is no paved walkway inside the Fairview Park. The walking tour is expected to be a few hundred feet long on the turf surface. Attendees are advised to wear appropriate shoes for the walking tour. There will be a mock-up rope guide. A sign language interpreter will be available at the meeting. An ADA guide will meet attendees at the Spring Street / Fairview Road intersection.

Registration for the meeting is optional, but is encouraged so attendees can be updated on future developments in the project. Register by completing this form.
