Volunteer ‘Fixers’ Sought for Second Gaithersburg ‘Fix-It Fair’ That Will Be Held in June

Talented residents who are skilled in fixing a wide variety of items are being sought to help others with objects that are not working in peak condition. The fixers will be at work at the Second City of Gaithersburg Environmental Affairs Committee “Fix-It Fair,” which will be held Saturday, June 3, at the Casey Community Center in Gaithersburg.

The Fix-It Fair will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Casey Community Center, which is located at 810 South Frederick Ave. in Gaithersburg.

At the Fix-It Fair, residents who have made appointments will be able to bring in personal items, such as toasters, bicycles or jewelry, for free repair.

Residents seeking repairs will register online up to two weeks prior to the event. Bookings will be in 30-minute time slots. Attendees will be informed that each repair will occur during the appointed time and that a complete fix is not guaranteed at this event.

The 2022 event had 34 appointments and a 95 percent success rate.

The event is sponsored by the City’s Environmental Affairs Committee which believes the “right to repair” and the ability to fix materials is crucial to transitioning away from a disposal society. Fixers are key to saving useful materials from landfills.

The City is seeking volunteer “fixers” with experience in:
  • Small appliances
  • Lamps
  • Jewelry
  • Textiles/clothing
  • Tool sharpening
Volunteer fixers will be provided with basic information on each appointment up to two weeks in advance of the event. Fixers must provide the necessary equipment and tools for their area of expertise.

Gaithersburg will provide for the fixers:
  • Basic materials/disposables as needed to perform the repairs
  • Tables and area for repair work
  • Opportunity to advertise fixer repair businesses at the event
  • Coffee, beverages and a hot boxed lunch
  • A City of Gaithersburg T-shirt
  • A held harmless waiver program
Potential fixers interested in volunteering can send an e-mail to environment@gaithersburgmd.gov by March 30. The type of materials they can repair and samples of their past success should be included.
