‘Polyphony Marimba’ Will Bring Music of Zimbabwe to Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring on Wednesday, Aug. 9

The music of Zimbabwe and Southern Africa will fill the stage at Veterans Plaza in Downtown Silver Spring from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 9, when Polyphony Marimba performs a free concert.

Veterans Plaza is located at One Veterans Place, next to the Silver Spring Civic Building in Silver Spring.

Polyphony Marimba was founded in 2010 and has grown steadily with six national tours, three albums and an ever-expanding fan base. It has an acoustic ensemble of nine players who want to make a life out of the roots music of southern Africa, while contributing their own creative expression to that tradition.

Polyphony Marimba founder Peter Swing has taught the music of Zimbabwe for 30 years and has led several previous ensembles. He and several other bandmates have made repeated visits to Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana to study with the masters and soak up the deep ancestry that permeates the land and people there. Polyphony Marimba is the culmination and fulfillment of that experience.

Polyphony Marimba recruits outstanding marimba players who have grown up playing Zimbabwean music—and who have the energy and talent to play six nights a week during summer tours. The nine-piece ensemble includes Peter and Karyna Swing, Jesse Larson and David Onstott from Santa Fe, Adam Halpin of Spokane, DeeDee and Tessa Wells of Joplin, Mo., Branson Seamons from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Conrad Rice from Eugene, Ore..

Its 2023 tour includes dates in Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
