Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center in Silver Spring Will Celebrate Its 50th Anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 8

Montgomery County Recreation’s Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, which opened in 1972 and this year is celebrating 50 years of serving the community, will observe its golden anniversary with a free community celebration from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center is located at 1000 Forest Glen Rd. in Silver Spring.

The event will include an outdoor farmers market, Angklung performances, demonstrations in tai chi and knitting.

Throughout the month of October, special events and programs will be held to celebrate the anniversary.

The center is named after Maryland State Senator Margaret C. Schweinhaut, who advocated for a place for older adults to have a place to gather and enjoy activities. Hundreds of residents regularly visit the Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center for art programs, dancing, entertainment, fitness classes, singing, Tai Chi, yoga and more.

The center is open from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.
