Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring to Host Reopening Celebration on Saturday, June 18

The Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring reopened to the public earlier this week. On Saturday, June 18, the center will host a reopening celebration.

The Coffield Center is located at 2450 Lyttonsville Road in Silver Spring.

A “Welcome Back Movie Night Festival,” featuring Disney's Encanto, will be held from 7-10 p.m. on June 18. The celebration will begin with fun activities for the entire family including music, food, a live Encanto character, Father's Day drum circle, Juneteenth Freedom Day Table and a TikTok Dance Booth. The movie will begin at dusk—around 8:45 p.m.

During the COVID-19 health crisis, the Gwendolyn E. Coffield Center and the Long Branch Community Recreation Center and Senior Center served as shelters for community members who needed safe lodging and basic services. The opening of the new Nebel Street Shelter in March made it possible to begin reopening plans for the community centers. The Long Branch Center reopened to the public on May 16.

“The reopening makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families and older adults to spend their leisure time,” said Montgomery County Recreation Director Robin Riley. “We have been working behind the scenes to have a facility where we can offer high-quality recreation programming for everyone.”

The Gwendolyn Coffield Center is in the heart of the Rosemary Hills community within the 17.1-acre Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park. The recreation center offers a variety of programs and activities for all ages. The parks grounds, managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, include a softball field, a football/soccer field, two multi-use fields, four tennis courts, a playground and a picnic area.

There will be free and affordable programing offered for adults, youth and families. That will include sports clinics, cooking classes, fitness, floor hockey, martial arts and futsal.

Operating hours for the Community Recreation Center are:
  • Monday -Thursday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
