September is “National Falls Prevention Month” and Montgomery County Recreation throughout the month will be offering multiple free activities and information sessions for seniors to increase awareness of falls. The programs will be available at a variety of facilities.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that falls are a threat to the health of older adults and can reduce their ability to remain independent. The free workshops will offer fun activities as well as education sessions and home assessments.

- Fall Prevention Awareness Day Lunch-N-Learn. Wednesday, Sept. 8. 12:30-1:30 p.m. White Oak Senior Center, 1700 April Lane, Silver Spring. Course #135566. Fall Prevention Awareness Day Lunch-N-Learn event provides helpful tips to reduce fall risk and become aware of things that can increase those risks. Participants can bring their lunch. Light snacks will be provided.
- Fall Prevention Balance Exercises Demonstration. Wednesday, Sept. 15. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Nancy H. Dacek North Potomac Senior Center, 13850 Travilah Rd., Rockville. Course #135539. Keith Federman, AFAA Certified Personal trainer, will demonstrate several balance exercises to reduce fall risks.
- Fall Prevention Program by Adventist HealthCare. Tuesday, Sept. 21. 10:30-11:30 a.m. Margaret Schweinhaut Senior Center, 1000 Forest Glen Rd., Silver Spring. Course # 134511. Adventist Healthcare Rehabilitation will provide education about falls, recommend changes that can be made at home and determine your risk of falling based on a standardized questionnaire. Scores will help determine if you may be referred for outpatient physical therapy or review some exercises you can perform at home to reduce your risk of falls.

- 4th Annual Fall Prevention Workshop w/Adventist Health. Tuesday, Sept. 28. 1-2 p.m. White Oak Senior Center. 1700 April Lane, Silver Spring. Course # 135265. Adventist Health will offer its annual workshop and Fall Prevention screenings virtually. Participants will have an opportunity to learn to safeguard their living space against falls and be screened for prevention. Zoom link will be sent in the registration receipt.

- Fall Prevention and Keeping Your Balance. Representatives from CAM Physical Therapy and Wellness Services, LLC present a free lecture. Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 1-2 p.m.
- Fall Prevention: Tai Chi and Balance. Kirk Talbott and team to will teach how to balance using with Tai Chi. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m.
- Fall Prevention: Keep Your Balance When Dancing. Dancing improves agility, balance, coordination, muscle strength and more. Robin Marshall explains and teaches line dance steps to help you keep the balance while dancing. Thursday, Sept. 23, 10 a.m.
