A celebration at the newly completed Josiah Henson Museum and Park in North Bethesda will be held from noon-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12. Montgomery Parks will host the free celebration that will feature family-friendly events, period re-enactments and musical performances.
The event will be part of the recognition of International Underground Railroad Month.
The Josiah Henson Museum and Park is located at the site where legendary abolitionist Josiah Henson was once enslaved. Henson’s inspirational life story includes escaping to Canada to ensure his own freedom and then leading 118 people from enslavement to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. International Underground Railroad Month aims to raise awareness of the conductors and heroes who were committed to freedom and peace.
Josiah Henson Museum and Park is located at 11410 Old Georgetown Rd. in North Bethesda.
Parking is available only at the Wall Park/Kennedy Shriver Aquatic Center, located 1.5 blocks away at 5900 Executive Blvd. Free shuttle service will be provided to and from the museum and park. Limited accessible parking is available at the museum site.
